This site is run by one person — Jaron Phillips, in Eagle Mountain, Utah. There is no company behind it and no analytics business being fed. This page lists everything the site keeps, because the list is short enough to just say out loud.

If you sign in

Signing in uses Google. Google tells the site three things: your name, your email address, and an account identifier that is unique to this site. Those are stored, along with the bear you have chosen as your avatar.

No password is ever created, sent, or stored here — Google handles that, and this site never sees it.

You can change the display name at any time from the profile menu. You do not have to sign in to use anything on the site.

If you make a character in the bear game

Making and downloading a character needs no account and stores nothing — it happens entirely in your browser.

Saving one to the public gallery does need an account, so that the bear belongs to you and you can delete it later. Saving stores:

  • the name you typed
  • the flattened picture of the character
  • your Instagram handle, but only if you chose to add one — it is shown publicly as a link on your character
  • your IP address
  • an approximate location, city and region only, worked out from that IP address — shown publicly as a tooltip on your character, along with the date

The IP address is used for the location lookup and to rate-limit saving, so one person cannot flood the gallery. It is not shown to anyone else.

Saved characters are public — that is the point of the gallery. You can delete any of your own at any time from the game page, either one at a time or all at once, and deletion is immediate and permanent. Characters saved before accounts existed have no owner attached; email me and I will remove those.

Likes

To stop the same person liking a character repeatedly, the site stores a scrambled fingerprint made from your IP address and browser name. It is one-way: it cannot be turned back into either. It is not stored on your device and it does not follow you to another browser.

Cookies and browser storage

There is one cookie, and it only exists once you sign in. It identifies your session and nothing else. It cannot be read by JavaScript.

If you download a bear, a small copy is kept in your own browser so it can appear as your avatar. That copy never leaves your device unless you sign in and choose to use it.

There are no advertising cookies and no third-party trackers on this site.

Other services this site talks to

  • Google — only when you press the sign-in button. Google's privacy policy.
  • ip-api.com — receives your IP address when you save a character, in order to return a city and region. Their terms.

Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with anybody else.

Getting your data removed

Your saved characters you can delete yourself, from the game page. For anything else — your whole account, or an old character saved before accounts existed — email germfil@gmail.com and say what you want gone. I will do it and tell you when it is done. You do not need to give a reason.

Children

This site is not aimed at children under 13 and accounts are not intended for them. If you believe a child has signed in or saved something, email me and I will remove it.

Changes

If what the site collects changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves.
